Workers upskilled to install Nomzano electricity

- Athina May

THE CITY has signed an agreement to provide training opportunities to EPWP workers in electrification in Pholile A and Sinyanyanzela informal settlements in Nomzamo in Strand. This is hoped to reduce illegal connections within the settlement as well as the possibility of electrocution.

This training provided by ALSU enterprises will consist of pole climbing and installation of cable, airdac, ready boards and pole boxes. A certificate of competence will be issued to each of the 52 Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) workers who participated.

“By including the local community in this project, we will maximise the impact of this work. Not only will the new electricity connections improve the living conditions of residents in these areas, but those participating in the project will be given the tools to uplift themselves and their families.

“This will also allow the electrification process of the nine townships to happen faster. Every time we have electricity issues, there is no one available to assist, now there will be. It’s a great response from the City to the problems we’re facing here,” said mayoral committee member for Area East, councillor Anda Ntsodo.

Ntsodo said many children in Nomzamo have fallen victim and been electrocuted due to live wire exposure in the area. He said this project will hopefully reduce bad electrical connections.

Ntsodo said the project is in line with the City’s Organisational Development and Transformation Plan goals to be a responsive, proactive and to work more closely with communities in order to enhance service delivery.
