Call to probe accused director
THE DA has called for an investigation into allegations that the Gauteng social development department sustainable livelihoods programme director July Maphosa abused public funds for his own use.
“This follows media reports that he misused thousands of rand of the people’s money, meant to uplift the poor. It is alleged that he stole the money and bought his girlfriend a car and furniture for his house, among other things,” DA Gauteng MPL Refiloe Nt’sekhe said yesterday.
The DA called on Gauteng social development MEC Nandi MayathulaKhoza to probe the allegations as a matter of urgency.
“We need to ascertain exactly how much money was squandered by this director,” Nt’sekhe said.
“Should these allegations hold true then Maphosa was not fit to hold this position, and we demand that he pay back every cent he has stolen. This is a clear abuse of the people’s money, which cannot be tolerated. This kind of corruption has now become a norm in ANC-led governments across the country, which shows that they are only there to line their pockets and not to service the poor. It is high time that the department implements a lifestyle audit for all its directors.”
The DA would table questions in the Gauteng provincial legislature to ascertain how Maphosa was able use the funds for his own personal gain, and what actions had been taken against him, Nt’sekhe said. – African News Agency (ANA)
