Joyous Celebratio­n big winners at Samas

STAR: Somizi sparkled at the 24th annual South African Music Awards at the Sun City Super Bowl on Saturday night SHEKHINAH took home three statuettes at the 24th annual South African Music Awards (Sama).

The singer-songwriter was the most nominated act at this year’s awards, with six nomination­s under her belt for her debut album but she was beaten by Joyous Celebratio­n, who were the biggest winners of the night.

While some acts were voted for by the public based on popularity – in cases such as the record of the year – and the Sama judges cast their votes for the rest of the categories, the sales awards mean that the fans put their money where their mouths are.

The non-broadcaste­d industry part of the awards recognised the individual­s and artists who work on the engineerin­g of a song or album.

Rouge took home the music video of the year trophy but was unable to attend because she was not well.

She, however, sent her mother to accept the award on her behalf.

The new school rapper, excitedly took to Twitter to confirm her latest win by thanking all of those who supported her even some people who did not believe in her work.

She said: “I just won my first Sama awards! I wasn’t there cause I’m quite sick. I know a lot of people didn’t expect me to take this… But GOD has me even when everyone counts me out! Thank you to everyone who believed in team Rouge.”

A night of celebratio­n and fashion had celebritie­s light up the red carpet at the Sun City Superbowl stage, in the North West.

MC of the night Mpho Popps entertaine­d the audiences with his quirky style of comedy.

The likes of award show nominees Shane Eagle, Ntando, Tribute Birdie Mboweni, Thabsie, Zoe Modiga, Tresor and Wouter Kellerman performed to get the audience on their feet.

Enthused Recording Industry of SA chief executive Nhlanhla Sibisi said: “Tonight has been exceptiona­lly good. We are proud of the nominees and those who emerged as winners.

“Let this be just the push they need to reach greater heights, we at Sama salute and honour them.”

Communicat­ions director for sponsors in the North West Department of Culture, Arts and Traditiona­l Affairs Daddy Sebolecwe said: “The first night set the tone for this year’s Sama event. We are proud to be part of such a prestigiou­s ceremony.” – Staff Reporters
