Trump needs relegating to sewage heap of history
PRAISE it or criticise it, the contestation that exists among Muslims, and between Muslims and non-Muslims, presents a dynamic that is not as visible or strident on the terrains of other faiths in the modern world, except perhaps between Buddhists and non-Buddhists, Muslims and Hindus.
The historical divisions existing in Christianity, as represented by the existence of numerous denominations, seem to have settled into the democratic social fabric. Western democracy is not so digestible in the Muslim milieu.
Ostensibly, Muslims are fighting to preserve Islam’s authenticity and unity, or the preservation of as defined in the Qur’an. This pursuit does not essentially need to create upheaval. However, it has been interpreted (or misinterpreted, depending on the camp you occupy) by many with other interests to secure political, economic and religious investment.
All these self-seeking forces attempt to usurp and divert popular struggles within the Muslim world today.
American foreign policy also contributes to the turmoil. Donald Trump has proven himself to be an American protagonist who comprehends fully political, social and religious cleavages, and ruthlessly exploits these to fortify his aims to reconfigure America as the super imperialist empire.
Trump’s most formidable threat to capture the Muslim world is currently Iran, so he conjures intrigue to alienate the Iranians.
It is a pity that the great American writer, scholar and social critic, Gore Vidal, has left us for I am convinced that he would have constructed an appropriate discourse, in America, to relegate Trump to the sewage heap of history, where he belongs.
