Superbly written thriller

- Karen Watkins

THE latest in the Robert Hunter series is an addictive page turner that will have you burning the midnight oil.

From the moment model Linda Parker steps into the Los Angeles house that she shares with her stray cat Mr Boingo, the mood is set when she pours herself a glass of wine and settles down to check her cellphone before spotting something in the dark doorway directly behind her.

“Thirty-seven years in the force, and if I was allowed to choose just one thing to erase from my mind, what’s inside that room would be it.”

That how it’s described as two detectives arrive at one of the most shocking crime scenes they have ever attended.

And with heightened suspense, one cliff-hanger leads to many more as the Ultra Violent Crimes Unit of the Los Angeles Police Department detectives Robert Hunter, who is a psychological profiler, and his partner Carlos Garcia, investigate the heinous crime.

There’s a serial killer on the loose whose hunting ground sees no borders; a psychopath who loves what he does because to him murder is much more than just killing – it’s an art form.

Believing the psychopath to be linked to two previous similar murders, the FBI takes over the investigation, to the reluctance of the LAPD.

Carter can most definitely write. The author has a background in criminal psychology and keeps us in suspense as the plot thickens. There were times when I was apprehensive to go to bed, checking doors and windows. The detail is inspired as the story unravels with red herrings, twists and turns as we join the dots on a journey of suspense and anticipation. The characters are believable with one possible exception towards the end.

This book is tense, well-paced and a wonderful read. Carter’s writing style is to be commended as he seems to get inside the head of criminals and describes in gory detail what they will do next.

Born in Brazil, Carter received his undergraduate and master’s degrees from the University of Oxford. He’s the author of

Science and Psychic Phenomena and Science and the NearDeath Experience.
