Relieving the stress of study fees

- Bianca Tommy

I AM one of the candidates who was lucky enough to receive a bursary and the way in which I discovered this bursary was through a Facebook post.

It was during a stressful time in which I had applied for this bursary because I wasn’t having any success with the other bursaries I was applying for. It was on the very last day of submissions when I submitted my bursary application and I was sure that I wasn’t going to receive the bursary but I still remained positive.

In the end I received the news that I was chosen to receive the bursary on the very last day of my orientation week at my university.

I think that I was chosen to receive this bursary because of the way in which I expressed my determination as being a very hard worker and being someone who is willing to go out into the community to help people.

I do not think that I would’ve been able to study if it wasn’t for me receiving this bursary because of the stress of tuition fees. I understand that there are other options such as a student loan but even that can put a lot of strain on a family.

Having this bursary has impacted my studies in a very positive way because it has helped to motivate me to work hard in order to succeed in my studies and by it seeing to my fees being paid it takes that stress off of me and allows to me fully pay attention to my studies.

I am currently studying for a bachelor of arts degree, in which I am majoring in psychology. My dream for the future is to go out into the community as a psychologist and help people by allowing them to know that there is someone who is willing to listen and who cares about what is going on in their lives.

Young people in today’s South Africa are having difficulty with regards to studying further and I believe it is because of the lack of bursary opportunities out there for them. I think that this results in these young people losing their drive and determination to want to go and study further.

I believe that young people need more support when it comes to their studies because despite the fact that there are some students who do not have the best academic results, they do have the drive and determination that can help them to succeed in their studies. They just need to be given a chance, a chance that can change their lives, their family’s lives and even possibly the lives of others who they might have an impact on.
