Retail giant gears up for massive clean-up

-

AFRICA’S biggest clean-up, which will see over 6 000 people in nine countries participate in approximately 500 events to remove waste from communities, is currently being planned by the Shoprite Group to encourage a movement of active citizens.

Clean-ups will take place from July 14 to 18 in a bid to inspire people to act for change.

The group is encouraging all to join in and initiate clean-ups within their communities, or join existing events.

“Plastic waste is putting the environment under considerable pressure, with the equivalent of a garbage truck of plastic being dumped into our oceans every minute.

“Furthermore, SA risks running out of landfill space over the next couple of years.

“Recycling is therefore central to this initiative and clean-up organisers are encouraged to partner with local recyclers or waste pickers to ensure that most of what is collected gets recycled.

“The Shoprite Group is further compelled to act for change among the people who make up the communities which it serves,” said the Shoprite Group.

Anybody can join the clean-up movement at www.actforchange.africa, which enables users to create their own clean-ups.

It also contains information about the nearest recycler or waste management company to get in touch with in your area, and clean-up organisers are given guidelines on what their duties are as hosts.

You will be shown how to market the event and what to do on the day and after the clean-up.

Participants can then share their experience on social media.
