Fashion focus on life of Mandela
Clothing line portrays meaningful messages,
KISUA Africa is paying homage to Nelson Mandela’s values and character through fashion. To celebrate Nelson Mandela’s centenary, the Nelson Mandela Foundation and Kisua Africa recently re-launched the 466/64 clothing line at The Melrose Gallery in Melrose Arch.
The 466/64 brand, which was derived from Mandela’s prison number 466 and the year he was arrested “1964”, has been in the works for two years.
The new collection which celebrates the life of Mandela is out and each piece has a meaningful message that relates to the Struggle icon’s revolution.
Trouble maker
Nelson Mandela was the champion trouble maker. His name Rolihlahla means troublemaker and he is recognised as a trouble maker with a cause, a trouble maker who wasn’t making trouble for the sake of making trouble but doing it for his principles and wouldn’t settle for less.
Commander
The commander symbolises Mandela as the founder of Umkhonto weSizwe, the military wing of the ANC.
Most people remember him as a sweet, peaceful old man who forgave everyone.
But when it was necessary, he was willing to be armed, for his principles. After the Sharpeville Massacre in 1960, he agitated for the formation of the wing within the ANC.
Woman in a doek
The story of the women who contributed and died for the revolution and freedom that we enjoy today is not told enough.
With this piece, they pay tribute and recognise the women who were at the forefront, fighting against apartheid.
The collection also includes a limited edition “Mandela100” capsule, which signify a once in a lifetime, centenary celebration.
The Freedom range is another T-shirt capsule included in the collection that features the iconic silhouette of Nelson Mandela as he was set free from prison in 1990.
This proudly South African-made collection is available for purchase on kisua. com, the Kisua Sandton City store and selected retailers nationwide.
