ABODYGUARD linked to “Steroid King” Brian Wainstein’s murder, Matthew Breet, can no longer afford to pay lawyer fees. He has since applied for SA Legal Aid representation. Breet appeared at the Cape Town Regional Court yesterday, on a charge of illegal possession of ammunition.

State prosecutor Advocate Mervyn Menigo requested that an additional charge of manufacturing illegal explosives be added.

For the illegal ammunition charge, the State alleged that on April 9, 2017, near McDonald’s in Sea Point, Breet was found with two 9mm rounds and seven shotgun rounds.

For the explosive charge, the charge sheet recorded that “from May to June, 2017, near Rondebosch East, the accused unlawfully and intentionally manufactured an unauthorised explosive with firecrackers attached to three carbon dioxide canisters”.

Menigo said there was another matter in Bellville that the State would request be added at a further date.

In a turn of events, Breet’s lawyer, Advocate Uys told the court his client wished to apply for Legal Aid representation. He informed the court that he had handed the matter over to the Legal Aid lawyer.

The case was postponed by Magistrate Michelle Adams to September 4.

Breet and his brother, Sheldon, are both implicated in Wainstein’s murder. His body was found in his Constantia home on August 18 last year. Wainstein was shot dead in front of his wife and child.

It is reported that Breet, together with a Mitchells Plain tyre dealership owner, allegedly hatched the plot to murder Wainstein. Breet allegedly provided hit men and an unnamed State witness with a detailed layout of Wainstein’s home on the night of the murder.

According to the State, there had been no attempt to disguise the hit as a house invasion, with just R100 and seven cellphones removed after the hit. Last week the Breet brothers were denied bail in the murder case.
