Artscape moves to develop young talent

- Peter Thomas

ARTSCAPE is playing host to a range of exciting events for young performing arts enthusiasts throughout August, providing school children with an invaluable insight into the life of a stage performer.

The youth-performer extravaganza starts on August 13, with the launch of the Schools’ Arts Festival. With over 100 schools participating, the fortnight-long festival is a gathering of Western Cape’s most talented young musicians, dancers and orators.

To add further incentive, the 20 best-performing schools will receive a participatory framed certificate and trophy, at a gala held on August 30.

The exciting month at Artscape does not end there, as 16 school drama troupes from the Western Cape will also participate in the High School Drama Festival from August 20 to 23 .

After viewing performances from 50 Western Cape schools, the Artscape Theatre Centre narrowed the competition down to 16 groups.

As a reward for their exceptional shows, the finalists were invited to perform on Artscape’s professionally-equipped stage, in front of an audience.

Marketing manager at Artscape, Simone Heradien said Artscape was excited to be hosting the events.

This year’s Drama Festival will be adjudicated by Riaan Visman, Sticks Mdidimba, Ilne Fourie and Lesley Manim.

They will be tasked to select the winners in: Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Script, Best Director, Best Production, Best Innovative Technical and Adjudicators Award.

The winners will be announced at a gala awards ceremony on August 25.
