Arson attempt on train thwarted

A FEW minutes after platforms 13 and 14 at Cape Town Station were reopened for commuters, there was another attempt to set alight an empty train coach at platform 11. But this was prevented by alert Metrorail employees.

Metrorail Western Cape spokespers­on Riana Scott said: “Our employees managed to extinguish the fire set to one of the carriage seats before significan­t damage could be done. Police and protection services officials were on the scene almost immediatel­y and managed to detain a suspect.”

Metrorail regional manager Richard Walker compliment­ed the quick reaction of employees to prevent further losses.

“Our employees are on high alert. Their quick action prevented another carriage going up in smoke,” said Walker.

He asked commuters to be observant and vigilant when trains approach stations. He urged people to report any suspicious activity or smell of accelerant­s immediatel­y to station or security staff.

Cape Town Fire and Rescue spokespers­on Theo Layne said one seat was set alight.

Anyone with informatio­n of any train fire can submit it to the police. A reward of up to R25 000 is being offered for informatio­n leading to a conviction.
