Look at the facts

-

KOERT Meyer’s letter, “Remember, the ANC enabled us to defeat apartheid” (Cape Argus, August 2) got me thinking about the real problems facing this country; and the most serious problem seems to be the inability (or unwillingness) to look at the real facts.

The ANC was not the only opposition to apartheid, and nor was it the only body taking effective action against it – there were sanctions imposed by nations who had been persuaded by organisations such as the Black Sash, the old PFP and the even older SACP as well.

And let’s not forget the PAC (also on your Opinion page). Even Helen Zille played a meaningful role long before her tweet.

So, to imply that they are the only group fit to run the country exhibits a serious case of blindness, especially when one sees all the failing municipalities and SOEs run (or run down) by members of the ANC.

Certainly, the DA has not covered themselves in glory after the mayoral issue, and I know people who are no longer contributing to their campaign fund. The EFF don’t seem to offer much except for TV entertainment when disrupting Parliament, the ACDP haven’t moved with the times and still oppose gay marriage, and Cope seem to have faded away.

There really doesn’t seem to be anyone worth voting for, but there is always someone worth voting AGAINST, and when doing that we should take a clear look at the facts and ask searching questions, such as:

Has there been large-scale corruption by party members in positions of power?

Has anybody been brought to book for corruption?

Has anybody in KZN been arrested for applying the “death penalty” to opposing political candidates in the party?

Have supporters of the party applied the death penalty to criminals after kangaroo courts in places like Khayelitsha?

A bit of clear vision may really improve the state of the country. ROB JOHNSTON Tokai
