Factory boss awaits sentencing for killing
IT WILL be another week before the sentencing of former Athlone factory shop boss Shabier Dalwai, convicted of killing an alleged thief. Yesterday, Western Cape High Court Judge Elizabeth Baartman postponed the matter to September 4.
Dalwai, owner of Carece Tissues, was on trial with two co-accused – Junaid Shaik and Samson Makula – following the discovery of Riedoh Hendricks’s battered body with burn and multiple gunshot wounds in Strandfontein.
Hendricks was kidnapped by the accused at a jewellery store in Athlone, on July 9, 2014.
He was taken to Dalwai’s home where he was tortured before being transported to Strandfontein, where he was killed.
Dalwai was convicted of murder, while Shaik and Makula were found guilty of assault with aggravating circumstances and kidnapping. Judge Baartman extended the bail conditions for Shaik and Makula, but ordered that Dalwai be sent to Pollsmoor Prison.
In her judgment, the judge said according to witness testimonies, Dalwai decided to kill Hendricks after he found the latter was allegedly responsible for a break-in at his store.
She said both the Section 204 witnesses and Shaik had expressed their fear of Dalwai, while Makula, who was employed by Dalwai, remained loyal and reserved his right to testify.
