LETTER CAPTURES THE SAGA OF DISTRICT SIX

- AZIZ HARTLEY

OUR story yesterday of Elsies River couple Cyril and Catherine Wagner is an example of the endless difficulty District Six land claimants endure. Many are in their sunset years and yearn to return to what they regard as their true home. There is so much to say about the District Six land restitution saga. I struggle with where to start.

But this letter by Cape Argus reader Giuseppe Massolini, from Paarl, more or less captures what I want to say:

“Peace to you Mr Hartley and all your readers.

“The cover picture of yesterday’s Argus has affected me so much. In observing it I see untold stories of happiness … of struggle … of giving up … of hope. Yet the strongest emotion that one can observe is one of utter sadness.

“How much longer will it take for Catherine and Cyril Wagner and countless others to obtain justice and redress? Our government is one of being obsessed with flying first class… of designer clothing… of fancy cars and blue lights. How can our leaders go to sleep at night while there is so much inequality in this land? My heart feels as heavy as a stone while I write this note to you. Sincerely.”

Thank you Giuseppe. Catherine’s picture on our front page, and the short story inside have indeed evoked many memories. I know thousands of other Cape Argus readers share your views.

Peace.
