DON’T JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER

- DANNY OOSTHUIZEN masekind321@gmail.com

IT IS in the news every day. And it is becoming more violent, horrific and extremely cruel.

I guess some of us have become desensitised by it all. Rape and murder used to be on the front pages. But such news has slowly crept on to the back pages. A close friend of mine was stabbed in the Company’s Garden over the weekend, which has become a hunting ground for thieves. He is now in Somerset Hospital.

The situation is so bad now that even poor, homeless people, who have nothing to steal, are getting stabbed.

My friend could have been killed. And then what? Just another homeless person who died and who will have a place with all the other poor souls – all cremated.

Law enforcement finally got the real criminals who had been hiding in the Kraal in the Bo-Kaap and – guess what – crime in the area decreased.

A job well done!

Another area that should be focused on is around the clubs in Green Point. I have seen how foreign nationals who are car guards pretend to assist drunk party-goers and, instead of helping them, rob them. I SUPPOSE we all have our favourite sayings. I have always believed – and probably often told people – that “violence is the last resort of the stupid”.

I think this applies equally to individuals and organisations. Even nations. When stupid people come to the point where they lose an argument or fail to reach a civilised settlement, this makes them angry, so they hit somebody. That doesn’t win the argument, of course, and it solves nothing, but stupid people are too stupid to realise this.

Another of my favourite sayings is that foul language is just the sign of a poor vocabulary. I know several people who sprinkle their sentences with the F-word so liberally that it ceases to mean anything. All it does is make the simplest statement sound disgusting. I try not to use obscene language in public, but often when I’m sure nobody can hear me, I swear like a trooper. It’s always to release frustration, and it’s

People in privileged positions should exercise some etiquette when dealing with those who are less fortunate
