BITE-SIZED BEAUTY

- LIAM KARABO JOYCE

WHEN we go to a spa, we often look forward to a hot stone massage, or a manicure and pedicure. Sometimes we might be adventurous enough to try out a weed wrap treatment. But what if the spa listed “backbiting therapy”? Would you consider it?

A number of Hollywood celebrities – from rapper Ye (formerly known as Kanye West) to music boss Simon Cowell, singer Katy Perry and socialite Paris Hilton – have endorsed the bizarre treatment.

It’s the brainchild of massage therapist Dorothy Stein, dubbed Dr Dot.

According to her website, her mother taught her the unusual technique of biting when she was five years old. Unable to use her small hands, her mother suggested she bite the knots instead. She later obtained her licence.

Her Instagram page is filled with pictures of her work and selfies with celebrity clients.

If Hollywood’s elite are willing to let a stranger bite them all in the name of relaxation, what else are they willing to to?

BIRD POOP FACIALS

Made popular by David and Victoria Beckham, the treatment, more delicately known as a Geisha facial, uses the excrement of the Japanese nightingale to exfoliate and purify the skin.

SNAKE VENOM BOTOX

Yes, you read right, someone consciously has snake venom injected into their skin, namely Gwyneth Paltrow. The synthetic snake venom complex has been engineered to be a non-invasive alternative to Botox. According to The Dermatology Review, Syn-Axe mimics the effects of snake venom by “reducing muscular contractions and cell movement, thereby keeping skin smooth”, which is similar to how Botox functions.

BURNING OFF SPLIT ENDS WITH ‘VELATERAPIA’

This is a traditional Brazilian hair treatment used by supermodels like Alessandra Ambrosio and Barbara Fialho. Veletarapia involves running pieces of hair along open flame to”‘trim” the split ends and seal the split in the hair strand. It takes 2 to 3 hours at a time. However, it can seriously damage your hair and many hairstylists have warned against it. Let’s be serious, do you really want to have your hair on fire?

RED WINE BATH

I love wine but not enough to bath in it. Let’s be honest, this beauty treatment seems so much more normal compared to snake venom botox.

Former Bond girl and Desperate Housewives star Teri Hatcher loves to add a bottle of red wine to her bath. She insists it softens and exfoliates her skin in the best way.

BLOOD MOISTURISER

Kim Kardashian gets a vampire facial and Hailey Baldwin uses blood moisturiser.

Baldwin uses a facial lotion that is concocted by Dr Barbara Sturm, a leader in molecular cosmetics.

Hailey’s blood is extracted from her arm and then put in a centrifuge to separate the plasma and white blood cells, which are then added to a cream that is called MC1 Blood Moisturiser.
