ANC calls on nation to pray for Mlangeni

- Staff Reporter

THE ANC has called on South Africans to keep Struggle stalwart Andrew Mlangeni in their prayers as the 93-year-old recovers in hospital.

The stalwart’s son, Sello Mlangeni, said his father was unwell but was in a stable condition. He has been in hospital since Friday.

ANC spokesperson Pule Mabe said the ANC had received news of Mlangeni’s ill-health from his family and was informed that the Struggle icon was in a critical but stable condition.

“The ANC wishes Tata Mlangeni a speedy recovery and also wish to call on South Africans to keep him and his family in their prayers.

“As we pause to reflect on Tata Mlangeni’s contribution, we cannot help but acknowledge his tremendous contribution that led to the Rivonia Trial where he stood shoulder to shoulder with Nelson Mandela and other triallists. We are forever indebted to him and his contemporaries in the Struggle,” Mabe said.

He said the party remains in touch with Mlangeni’s family for an update on his condition.

“We extend our hand of support to his family in dealing with the anxiety of his admission.”

Mlangeni is one of the only two surviving Rivonia triallists. The other survivor is 85-year-old Denis Goldberg, with whom he stood trial along with Nelson Mandela, Ahmed Kathrada, Govan Mbeki and Raymond Mhlaba, among others.

He was among 11 anti-apartheid activists who were arrested in 1963 at Lilliesleaf Farm, Rivonia, and was sentenced to life in prison on Robben Island. |
