Lipstick textures you should know

GERRY CUPIDO

WHEN you are not wearing make-up, a touch of lipstick will instantly brighten up your face… Whether it’s a glossy nude or a matt red, lipstick is a girl’s best friend and a handbag must-have.

When standing at a cosmetic counter and faced with rows of lipsticks, choosing the one for you can be a long exercise. You might want to ask yourself do you know what shade of pink you want? Pastel pink or shocking cerise? Shine or matte? Here are six lipstick textures you should know.

SHEER AND CREAMY

These are your classic lipsticks. They’re great for any time of day. Most sheer lipsticks contain moisturisers, so you don’t have to worry about your lips drying. This is the ideal lipstick to double-up as blush (if it’s in a pink or red tone). Apply straight from the stick for full coverage or dab with your finger for a more transparent tint. The disadvantage is that you would need to apply colour frequently. Favourite: Smashbox Be Legendary Cream Lipstick (R295)

LIP STAINS

If you want to give your lips a hint of colour without a matte or satin finish then you should give lip stains a try. They come in a liquid or gel form and can be long lasting.

Favourite: Essence Tint & Colour Shot (R54.95)

MATTE

If you’re looking for a lipstick that doesn’t require a frequent touch-up and will remain firmly in place all day (or night), then a matte lipstick is a good option for you. Matte lipsticks have a tendency to dry your lips out. When wearing a matte lip colour, it’s vital to make sure your lips are regularly exfoliated and well moisturised.

Favourite: MAC Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolour (R315)

LONG-LASTING

If you want staying power without the dry, matte look then long-lasting lipsticks are a better option for you. These lipsticks are usually highly pigmented and provide full cover. They might not have a matte finish, but they tend to dry your lips in the same way matte lipsticks do. So keep your lips hydrated by applying lip balm.

LIP LACQUER

If you love the feel of a lip-gloss but looking for more coverage instead of the transparency of a gloss, then try a lip lacquer. They have a creamy and thick texture with a high gloss finish. They come in a variety of colours.

Favourite: Stila Stay-All-Day Liquid Lipstick (R325)

LIP-GLOSS

Used on its own or over lipsticks, glossy lipsticks have become a regular addition to any lipstick collection. The clear gloss is available in tones of pinks and nudes.

Favourite: Bobbi Brown Crystal Lip Gloss (R320)
