Neons back in the limelight

- GERRY CUPIDO

THE ’80s fashion era is loved by many and you are about to fall in love with it all over again. Fluorescent neons are back and the blinding colours are louder than ever. For the girl who prefers a neutral wardrobe of white, black and greys you might want to put on some dark shades.

Thanks to ’80s pop stars like Madonna, Wham! and Tiffany, teenagers followed in their idols’ fashion footsteps by wearing colours like dayglo yellow, blue, green and pink on everything from T-shirts to shoes, even gym wear, while neon-printed garments were all the rage.

We saw the luminous colours when Rihanna’s Fenty x Puma 2018 collection had hints of neon on almost all the garments, while Marc Jacobs showed us blindingly bright suits with neon pink moonbags. So it’s no surprise to see the neons in Jeremy Scott’s collection at the New York Fashion Week. Even Christian Siriano showed a bright yellow suite at the Spring 2019 Collection.

If you consider yourself a true fashion fundi, then try the following tricks to work the look into your wardrobe: Play around with accessories. A cute clutch for evenings or a lumo slingback for daywear. Electrify any look with sexy neon stilettos or funky sneakers.

A belt is versatile and can instantly change any look. Swop your conservative black belt for a neon one to add an edgy look to just about any outfit.

Choose one bright clothing item when putting a look together. Look out for garments with neon details.
