VICTIMS OF RAPE NEED SUPPORT AND PROTECTION
CHERYL Zondi is very brave. She is testifying in the Eastern Cape High Court in Port Elizabeth in the trial of self-proclaimed prophet and Nigerian pastor Timothy Omotoso. He’s charged with rape and the trafficking of 30 girls and women. Zondi, allegedly one of Omotoso’s victims, deserves our respect and support.
This young woman must be saluted for the courage she’s shown while being questioned by defence lawyer Peter Daubermann. His aggressive cross-examination has been slammed. Zondi, 22, held her nerve as she endured excruciating interrogation. Yes, she was in tears several times, but she confronted her alleged rapist in full view of the world. She waived her right to not be identified – an extremely difficult decision for rape victims.
South Africa’s rape statistics are shockingly high – about 124000 cases in three years – or about 800 rapes a month. And these are only the reported cases. Given that a huge number of rapes go unreported, we need more people like Zondi. Of course this is easier said than done. But this is why every member of society must show support for rape victims. It is also why the justice system must offer victims complete protection – before, during and after the trial. Rapists are the scum of the earth. There is no place for them in society. It is up to all of us to ensure they get this message.
Peace.
