Proposal to rename Little Glen
CAMPS Bay residents want the Little Glen Nature Reserve to be renamed after deceased resident Arthur Shephard who personally and at his own expense contributed to transform the former run-down space.
Camps Bay Ratepayers and Residents Association (CBRRA) chairperson Chris Willemse submitted a proposal for the reserve to be renamed in Shephard’s honour.
According to a public participation report undersigned by mayco member for urban development and transport Brett Herron, the renaming proposal highlighted that Shephard, in his personal capacity and mostly at his own expense, both in financial terms and personal efforts, co-ordinated the transformation of the reserve from a run-down unsafe public space to an area that is well landscaped, secure and a community attraction, particularly for children.
Herron said in the report: “A total of 127 people took part in the public participation exercise, with 73 or 57% supporting the renaming proposal and 54 or 43% not supporting it.
“In summary, the main theme of support for the renaming proposal consists of Arthur Shephard being considered overwhelmingly worthy of the honour.
“Many participants… indicated that they personally knew Shephard and observed his efforts and great dedication in the beautification of the Little Glen.”
But the City wants to acknowledge Shephard in a memorial plaque and information board that will feature the history of the park and his contributions.
Willemse said Shephard sought no glory or even recognition for himself while dedicating himself to a community project. “As a mark of gratitude, and in honour of his life, we feel it only fitting that this now pristine area bears his name. The proposal was made at Arthur’s memorial service in June 2015 and was warmly received.”
Camps Bay resident Johnny Copelyn said Shephard led and co-ordinated all the efforts, worked in the park planting and preparing things as well as raised money. The proposal is subject to approval by the full council later this month.
