MURDER MOST FAB
IS IT my imagination or is Viola Davis looking even hotter in the fifth season of How to Get Away with Murder?
The opening scenes of this season, with a carefree Annalise Keating (Davis) on the dance floor at Connor Walsh (Jack Falahee) and Oliver Hampton’s (Conrad Ricamora) wedding, is short-lived. True to form, the show-runners are most artful in working a murder into the storyline.
And so begins the season that shifts between present day and the past.
There is a new face this season - Gabriel Maddox (Rome Flynn), a second-year student who has managed to impress Annalise.
Aside from the eye candy factor, there is more to him than meets the eye. And he is on Frank Delfino and Nate Lahey’s radar – albeit for different reasons.
The first three episodes are definitely the calm before the storm. And the ripple effect of Bonnie Winterbottom’s actions on the night of Connor and Oliver’s wedding will be felt by them all.
With a show titled How to Get
Away with Murder, you can probably guess how it will end. But the one thing it isn’t is boring – the writers ensure it is a minefield of twists. And the new faces impact on the character dynamics.
Another show that gets the thumbs up is Manifest.
This mystery drama is kind of a love child of Lost and The 4400.
We are already three episodes in on catchup. Be warned, once you start watching, you won’t be able to stop. It’s that spellbinding.
It follows a group of people who were on a flight from Jamaica to New York City. Aside from experiencing some turbulence mid-air, they eventually arrive at their destination.
Now for the twist – to them, they only were away from their loved ones for a brief period.
The reality, they have been missing for almost 5½ years and were presumed dead.
Despite the time gap, everyone on the flight hasn’t aged either. But picking up the pieces of their lives is an emotional journey laden with upsets and small joys.
Then there’s the issue of the voices in their heads and what it means. You don’t want to miss this show.
■ How to Get Away with Murder airs on 1Magic (DStv Channel 103) on Monday at 8.30pm. Manifest airs on M-Net on Monday at 8pm.
