CAPE KIDS LEARN TO SWIM

CHILDREN from different schools in the Western Cape are receiving free swimming lessons from various coaches through the recently established Learn to Swim project.

The Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation has partnered with Lifesaving SA and established the Learn to Swim project to raise awareness among children about the risks, and safety measures to be taken when around water.

The organisation is currently helping children through the Water Safety programme and Learn to Swim project.

The foundation interacts with a diverse range of local athletes and sport stars. They are seen as a form of inspiration and motivation to the children in disadvantaged communities.

“We hope to reach as many kids as possible and teach them the basic water safety skills, including first-aid and CPR,” said SA Olympic Gold medallist Ryk Neethling.

“Swimming is a basic life skill and it brings a lot of confidence to one.

“I almost drowned when I was 5, so I also know the importance of it.

“It is also a big honour for me to be working with the princess; she has a real passion for helping children,” added Neethling.

He explained that they aimed to raise as much funds as possible through the foundation and to reach communities nationwide.

The foundation has approached Floreat Primary School, Sibelius High and Blue Downs Primary in the Western Cape through the Learn to Swim project.

Five lifeguards appointed by Lifesaving SA were teaching Floreat Primary School Grade 3 and 4 children to swim and another five lifeguards were giving Grade 8s at Sibelius High School, in Retreat, swimming lessons yesterday.

“Princess Charlene has given these kids in the community a great opportunity and the organisation is just doing wonders and changing kids’ lives,” said Allie Absalom, lifeguard coach of the Learn to Swim project.

“It’s about teaching these kids life skills. Most of our kids come from broken households. They are vulnerable and by teaching them water safety and how to swim, we give them the confidence they need,” said Absalom.
