Minstrels take to the stage

- Staff Reporter

SATIN to Sequins – More than a Minstrel, a musical centred around the fictional troupe the Woodstock Darlings, returns to the stage tonight.

It will run at the Baxter for three weeks. The show stars Loukmaan Adams and Carmen Maarman, alongside true blue minstrels and superb actors. Alistair Izobell directs and Zakhele Nkosi choreographed the show. Satin to Sequins – More than a Minstrel is written by Riyaad Peters and Izobell and the show is produced by Oddball Concepts.

The original show was launched in 2014 at the Joseph Stone in Athlone.

“In the first version, it was about a boy living with his single mother, who wanted to change the way the minstrel troupes operate. He had big ideas for how this could be done,” said Aeysha Abrahams of Oddball Concepts. “The story continues in More Than a

Minstrel. We see Mr Biggs’s son (played by Adams) and what life is like as he carries on this legacy of his father and his troupe, the Woodstock Darlings.”

Troupes rehearse throughout the year. It’s a competitive and diverse community from accountants, lawyers to bank clerks. An energetic young generation is taking this inimitable form of street theatre/culture forward. Satin to Sequins – More than a Musical runs from November 6th to 24th every night at 8pm (No shows on Sundays and Mondays with 4pm matinees on Saturdays: 10th, 17th, 24th.
