Mourning the death of an incredible man of God, Reverend Wessels

-

THE Calvyn Protestant Church of South Africa mourns with the entire nation of South Africa the passing of church leader Rev Chris Wessels. He was an emeritus minister of the Moravian church who played a critical role in the fight against apartheid. He was together with others detained, humiliated, mocked and discriminated against and throughout upheld his dignity.

This year Rev Wessels celebrated 48 years of ordained ministry. His first congregation was in Eldorado Park and after that he ministered in many places in the country, most notably in Port Elizabeth where he was at one point detained for about four months and also charged with terrorism.

Furthermore he supported and graciously walked with the families of those imprisoned.

The church further recognises his role in Christian student leadership, the work he did in the development of youth groups, conducting workshops, camps and the many he mentored, guided and prayed with. He was and is one of the greatest leaders produced by this wonderful land, a true son of the soil, a simple honest man.

In celebration, the church stands in silence and gratitude for the work of this extraordinary human being, a humble pastor, a faithful servant of Jesus Christ, a loving family man and a true pillar of the community.

The Calvyn Protestant Church of South Africa in sympathy shares condolences with his wife, Nabs, who is also facing serious health issues, as well as to his children, extended family and friends.

Rest in peace. Lala ngoxolo. Mooi loop, Oom Chris.
