Drug busts, arrests made in police sting

AS PART of their “high-density operations” to curb gangsteris­m and crime in the Western Cape, police conducted several operations, confiscate­d thousands of drugs and made more arrests over the weekend.

Police spokespers­on FC van Wyk said that in an effort to ensure communitie­s were safe, “several operations were embarked upon from Friday until (yesterday) across all precincts within the province”.

He said that in Bishop Lavis three firearms were confiscate­d and three suspects aged 18, 23 and 24 were arrested during an integrated operation comprising the Anti-Gang Unit and Operation Thunder forces, which descended on several locations on Friday.

“On Friday, in Bellville, crime prevention unit members arrested another two suspects aged 28 and 29 in the CBD for possession of 5 900 bunches of khat packaged in 11 boxes weighing 640kg,” Van Wyk said

In Kraaifonte­in, 1 000 mandrax tablets were seized in another operation win in which two suspects were arrested.

One suspect was arrested in Langebaan for being in possession of stolen property and house-breaking implements.

“Southern Cape police in Conville apprehende­d six suspects, confiscate­d two replica firearms, stolen cellphones and quantities of drugs.”

Van Wyk said that in Wallaceden­e, Kraaifonte­in, members of the provincial interventi­on unit on an operation arrested a 20 year old found with 549 bankies of dagga weighing 2.4kg and 3.3kg of loose dagga.

He said all arrested suspects were expected to appear in court soon.

Van Wyk said that on Friday the Mitchells Plain crime prevention unit arrested a 58-year-old man at a house in Rocklands after receiving an anonymous tip that a large quantity of drugs were being stored at the house. He said police found drugs with an estimated street value of R60 000.

The suspect will appear in the Mitchells Plain Magistrate’s Court today on charges relating to possession of drugs.
