‘Killer’ lover in bail appeal bid

- Zodidi Dano

LEAVE to appeal bail were denied in the case of Wayne Lawrence, who is accused of murdering his partner.

Lawrence is accused of shooting his ex-girlfriend, Angela Marinus, 35, at close range also wounding his 16-year-old daughter, at their home in Montevideo on December 11, 2017.

He handed himself in two days after the murder. He faces charges of murder, attempted murder and breach of a protection order. Yesterday, the Western Cape High Court heard the appeal against bail being denied by the Bishop Lavis Magistrate’s Court.

The court heard that Lawrence was separated from Marinus due to his alleged physical and emotional abuse.

Marinus was granted a protection order against him, but on the day of the murder, Lawrence waited for her at the driveway of her mother’s house.

As she arrived with their daughter in the car, it is alleged that shots were fired at Marinus, hitting her in the head and body.

Their daughter was injured. The protection order was postponed for mediation at the time of the incident.

Defence counsel William Booth argued that Lawrence had, since the incident, not tried to make contact with his daughter, a material witness.

“One can’t say because it’s his daughter he is going to call her to change her evidence,” he said. Judgment will be next week. |
