Gunners saved by skipper

-

PIERRE-Emerick Aubameyang once again rescued Arsenal as his brace earned them a 2-2 draw at Norwich City in Freddie Ljungberg’s first game as caretaker manager yesterday.

Arsenal twice trailed with Norwich’s goals coming from Teemu Pukki and Todd Cantwell but Aubameyang ensured the Gunners returned to London with a point even if their winless run in the Premier League now extends to six games.

Pukki’s deflected shot crept past Bernd Leno in the 21st minute but Norwich’s lead did not last long as Aubameyang scored with a twicetaken penalty after his initial effort was saved by Tim Krul. The kick was ordered to be re-taken after VAR ruled Norwich’s players had encroached into the area.

Cantwell restored Norwich’s lead in first-half stoppage time.

Aubameyang fired in from close range to level again in the 57th minute but it was Norwich who looked the more likely winners with Leno making several good saves.

Norwich remain second from bottom with 11 points from 14 games while Arsenal are eighth.

A superb second-half header by Matt Doherty cancelled out an early goal by Lys Mousset as Wolverhampton Wanderers came from behind to draw 1-1 at home to Sheffield United yesterday, extending their unbeaten Premier League run to nine games.

The crowd at Molineux had barely taken their seats when Mousset struck after 62 seconds.

Despite creating a number of decent chances, the home team looked all at sea for much of the first hour until Doherty met a Raul Jimenez cross with a powerful header to put them level in the 64th minute.

Doherty celebrated the goal with an emotional tribute to the two-yearold daughter of former Wolves striker Benik Afobe who died on Friday, removing the black armband being worn in her honour and kissing it before holding it up to the sky.

The goal prompted a sustained period of pressure from Wolves but Sheffield United showed why they are unbeaten away from home this season with a tenacious defensive display as they hung on for the draw.

“We defended badly in the first situation but we stayed in the game and competed until the end,” Wolves coach Nuno Espirito Santo told reporters.

Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder was disappointed with how his side conceded but pleased with the performance against a sixthplaced Wolves side one point ahead of them on 20 points after 14 games. |
