Arrests for firearms, vehicle and cable theft

AN 18-year-old suspect is expected to appear in the Bishop Lavis Magistrate’s Court today on charges of possession of an unlicensed 9mm firearm and ammunition.

Police pursued a suspicious-looking male in 8th Avenue, Valhalla Park, Bishop Lavis on Friday morning.

According to police spokespers­on FC van Wyk, officers found a pistol and a magazine with four rounds of ammunition in his possession.

Meanwhile, a 23-year-old man will appear at the Mitchells Plain Magistrate’s Court on charges of theft and possession of a stolen vehicle.

His arrest comes after the police conducted patrols in Eastridge, Mitchells Plain, and found residents chasing a blue Toyota Tazz.

Officers apprehende­d the driver in Imperial Road, Beacon Valley.

According to Van Wyk, the suspect allegedly stole the vehicle at Calypso Square Plaza.

Police arrested two men on charges of attempted cable theft. This comes after officers witnessed the suspects cutting railway signal cable in Pinelands. According to a law enforcemen­t spokespers­on, officers found the suspects inside a freshly dug trench along the railway lines just after 4am.

The suspects were apprehende­d and charged in terms of the Criminal Matters Amendment Act (CMA) at Pinelands police station. Later that day, officers returned to the area and found another suspect cutting the same cable. The man was arrested and charged in terms of the CMA. |
