Theatre needs funds to stay open

THE MASQUE Theatre in Muizenberg has launched a campaign to raise funds to keep its historic doors open.

The 61-year-old community theatre, which also doubles as a non-profit organisation, has reached out to its community and avid theatre supporters to avoid having to close for good.

The venue is looking to raise at least R250 000.

The Masque Theatre was officially opened in the seaside community more than 61 years ago and at the time it was one of the only two multi-racial theatres in Cape Town.

Regular visitors were often treated to the vibrant history of the theatre and dynamic productions.

Daniel Enticott, the chairperson of the Masque’s board, said: “The power of community theatre is living evidence, the passion for theatre tends to have a very resilient flame. To this end, the Masque Theatre has undertaken several inspiring initiatives, some during lockdown.”

The team at the popular venue have reached out to people on social media, encouraging them to support and donate. The campaign to help the theatre was launched on BackaBuddy.

“The beauty of crowdfunding is that so many people and organisations can be reached, and by many people contributing only a small amount of money towards the cause in question,” said Enticott.

“We encourage people to contribute as much as they can or as little as they are able to.”

Actress and board member Erica Schofield said: “Working on this campaign has shown me how unique the Masque Theatre is. I really hope the public will support our BackaBuddy campaign.”

She said the money raised would help the theatre continue to serve the community, while developing young actors and providing affordable venues for amateur and professional productions.
