Slipper Day makes dreams come true

AN ORGANISATION making the dreams of children with life-threatening illnesses come true is gearing up for its annual Slipper Day next month.

Reach For A Dream is appealing to the public to assist by supporting its campaign on May 7.

It is the foundation’s most anticipated and celebrated fund-raising campaign. A supporter sticker can be bought for R20 at selected retailers and special slippers for the occasion via its website.

For the past 33 years, the non-profit organisation has assisted children from the ages of three to 18.

This year, the foundation aims to fulfil 1200 dreams.

Marketing manager Roxanne Manuel said: “Due to the pandemic, Slipper Day had to be cancelled in 2020, leaving many dream children more isolated than ever before. These brave children are in desperate need of our attention and support, especially now as they face the biggest fight of their lives.

“Through the support of donors, volunteers, schools and the wider public, these children can experience a moment of joy and hope when their dreams are fulfilled, which ultimately has a positive effect on how they feel.”

Owing to the Covid-19 pandemic, remote engagement, technology and virtual reality, where possible, are used to fulfil dreams. The campaign’s annual running theme, “Not all Heroes Wear Capes”, pays tribute to these brave children, their families and hospital staff.

Reach For A Dream chief executive Julia Sotirianakos said: “This Slipper Day promises to echo the hearts of all our heroes, and why it is so important for South Africans to come together and believe in the power of dreams and, more so, what this means for a child sick in hospital.”

The campaign is supported by partnering retailers Dis-Chem pharmacies, Pick n Pay and Wimpy, where supporter stickers can be bought from today. Visit www.slipperday.co.za for more information and to buy the slippers.

For every sticker bought, Wimpy will be offering a free coffee on Slipper Day. Slipper Day selfies can be shared on social media platforms, with the accompany hashtag #slipperday2021.
