Hunt irate with Chiefs’ defending

KAIZER Chiefs coach Gavin Hunt was frustrated with the performance of his troops following their 2-2 draw with Stellenbosch FC at FNB Stadium in Soweto on Tuesday.

Chiefs had to twice come from behind through goals from Leonardo Castro and Nkosingiphile Ngcobo after Nathan Sinkala and Pathutshedzo Nange put the Western Cape side ahead.

“We are very disappointed. We should have controlled the game better. We didn’t and they scored,” said Hunt.

“Defensively we have to do better. We were not in the position of the field were we should be.”

Hunt conceded that Chiefs’ defending, which has cost them several times already this season, was once again a low point of their play.

“It’s been our Achilles heel this season. It cost us again. We were a bit flat at times but we got into the game.

“The second goal took a little bit out of us but I’m disappointed with the result because I thought that you have to do better than that.

“The second goal we conceded was really schoolboy, same position and bad defending, something which has cost us the entire season.”

Hunt also admitted that the style of play utilised by Chiefs in the game played to the strengths of the visitors from the Cape, who have a very unorthodox style, different from the other PSL sides.

“You don’t want a game against Stellenbosch to go from end to end because that suits them, you want to stay a bit compact before we start chasing it.

“They have three strikers who like to play in half-space before dropping off. If you don’t get it right, they will pounce and we will be in trouble and end up chasing.”

The result left Chiefs ninth in the standings with 24 points from 20 games, one point above Stellies.

At this stage, Chiefs’ aim will be to attain a strong top eight position after what has been a poor campaign for them.

Chiefs will next be in action against Horoya in the CAF Champions League at the General Lansana Conte Stadium in Guinea on the weekend before returning to South Africa to face off against Baroka FC on Thursday.

Stellies host third-placed AmaZulu in a league match tomorrow evening.
