THE net of justice is closing on alleged underworld kingpin Nafiz Modack, as he again appeared in court, this time linked to a foiled hand grenade attack on the home of slain detective Charl Kinnear.

Modack was charged with conspiracy to commit murder and with attempted murder, following the foiled attack on Kinnear and his family back in 2019.

Modack, and two other accused, Janick Adonis and Amaal Jantjies, are charged with attempting to kill Kinnear (who has since been killed), his wife Nicolette, children Carlisle and Casleigh, as well as sergeants Grant David Oakes and Mfuneko Sizani by approaching the Kinnear’s house to throw a hand grenade at them.

Oakes and Sizani were believed to be the officers who were guarding the Kinnear family at the time of the incident.

Modack appeared in the Bishop Lavis Magistrate’s Court and, according to National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila, the hand grenade case is linked to an ongoing case at the Parow Regional Court where Jantjies is applying for bail.

On the corruption charge, he appeared alongside Ashley Tabisher, 39, an Anti-Gang Unit officer stationed at Faure, who was arrested at the weekend on suspicion of forwarding information to Modack about investigations relating to him.

Ntabazalila said Modack also appeared on different counts which included conspiracy to commit murder on five occasions, attempted murder, conspiring to acquire an explosive and conspiring to have explosives in his possession or under their control.

Modack is also linked to the eventual murder of Kinnear and the attempted murder of prominent Cape Town advocate William Booth.

Outside court, Nicolette Kinnear said Modack had always hated her husband. “He hated the fact that my husband wouldn’t treat him with kid gloves. If their paths crossed on the side of law, he would be treated as anyone else, and I would be lying if I said it’s a surprise,” she said.

Nicolette first spoke out about the danger her family was in back in January 2020 after police protection at their home had been withdrawn.

At the time, she said her worst fears were confirmed on November 23, 2019, when police guarding their house apprehended a suspect in possession of a hand grenade in front of their house.

A representative of the Bishop Lavis Community Policing Forum (CPF) and the Bishop Lavis Action Community spokesperson, Amanda Davids said the CPF had requested for no bail to be granted to anyone involved in the assassination of Kinnear.

Last year, police arrested Zane Killian in Gauteng for his alleged involvement in the murder of Kinnear, who was shot and killed in front of his house in Bishop Lavis on September 18.
