Wynberg full value for their victory

-

SCHOOLS rugby in the Western Province kicked off in fine style over the weekend with the main focus on the Southern Suburbs derby fixtures.

At Rondebosch, Wynberg were full value for their 19-5 win over the home side after outscoring them three tries to one.

The first half was a typical opening season encounter with both sides guilty of unforced errors.

The forwards were evenly matched in the set-pieces but Wynberg had the edge in the rucks, where burly prop Zak Porthen was prominent.

Wynberg, notwithstanding territorial advantage, could only manage a lone try in the first half via a long range solo effort from scrumhalf Asad Moos to lead 5-0 at the interval.

After the changeover, the game came alive as ’Berg centres Thaaqib Ryland and Eben Tshimanga had the opposition at full stretch.

It was Tshimanga who increased their lead after a fine off-load by Ryland. Ben Currie converted to make it 12-0.

This stung Rondebosch into action and they launched several attacks, but the visitors defence held firm.

In the closing stanza of the game,Wynberg brought on fresh legs and it soon paid dividends.

This time Tshimanga turned provider as they counter-attacked from their own try line and replacement scrumhalf Tyler Williams covered 50 metres to score a converted try.

Rondebosch were rewarded for their efforts with a consolation try by replacement wing Michael Taylor just before the final whistle.

On the neighbouring field, Bishops edged out Sacs 29-20 in a closely contested fixture.
