Driving on our roads not for faint-hearted

-

ON Wednesday morning, we took my son to the airport for his return to the UK. We left Bergvliet at 6.45am and faced a huge shock on the M3 to the airport turn-off.

We did manage to get there in reasonable time, but what a stressful experience – drivers changing lanes for no apparent good reason), taxis coming up the road reserve and pushing in…

We had breakfast at the airport to kill time but the return trip was no better. The road from the airport to the Muizenberg turn-off was bumper to bumper. I have never seen so many taxis. How do people cope with this daily? My nerves were in shreds by the time we got back home.

I was thinking of our trip to Amsterdam and London last year. The trips to and from the airport were a pleasure – free-flowing and stress-free – then I realised, of course, those cities have great public transport, especially Amsterdam. The trams are clean and easy to use; you can get anywhere on them, just about.

That got me thinking about the household survey the city is doing. To my mind, a waste of time. When are they going to look at the roads and the transport? And the clogged up river? Also, the miles of trash on the side of the road on the way to and from the airport? What a greeting to tourists!

Taxis have hijacked the roads and it’s high time something is done. Trains and buses need to be used to a far greater extent than they are.

There has to be a solution to this clogged-up mess on our roads.

It would be good to get some response from the City on this. ANNE OLVER | Bergvliet
