MARK RUBERY CHESS

-

In 2001 Garry Kasparov beat Terence Chapman 2,5-1,5 in a charity odds match that took place in Simpson’s-in-the Strand, London. Chapman, a former schoolboy champion come millionaire businessman, challenged the world’s highest rated player to a match with the proceeds going to Kasparov’s chess school in Jerusalem. Kasparov had 6 pawns and 60 minutes, Chapman all 8 pawns and 90 minutes per game.

Game 1: Kasparov entered a rook ending having won back his two pawns and then proceeded to outplay his opponent. Game2: Chapman neutralised Kasparov’s attacking ambitions while retraining his two pawn advantage and then offered a draw from a position of strength.

Game 3: Kasparov developed a dangerous looking initiative, but this was to be Chapman’s finest hour as he coolly calculated that he could promote to another queen and survive the onslaught.

Game 4: With the match all square Chapman missed a simple tactic and dramatically collapsed.

Here is the game that Chapman will treasure as much as making his first million.
