US looks back at its hottest year

The contiguous 48 US states had the hottest year last year since scientists began recording temperatures in 1895, according to a government report.

In its annual report, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said the annual average temperature last year was 12.94ºC.

That figure compared with the average temperature of 11.11ºC observed in the previous 117 years.
