Ready to razzle and dazzle ‘em

- DAVID THISELTON

YOGAS Govender was delighted with the wellbeing of Razzle Dazzle Rose ahead of her tilt at the Grade 1 Maine Chance Paddock Stakes over 1800m at Kenilworth on Saturday and he believed Martial Eagle’s current 80-1 odds for the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate were not a realistic reflection of his chances. Govender was also bullish about his three runners at Kenilworth today.

He said, “Bernard Fayd’Herbe got off Razzle Dazzle Rose after her last work out and said he reckoned she could win on Saturday. She is probably even better than she was before her last race.”

The four-year-old Jet Master filly at last fulfilled her potential in that last start in the Grade 3 Victress Stakes over the Paddock Stakes course and distance, winning cosily under Fayd’Herbe from pole position. Before that she had won a handicap event over the same distance in good style from a good draw of three.

Draw

The downside on Saturday is her wide draw of 15 out of 15. Govender said, “From that draw we will have no option, but to drop her out. But this filly has an unbelievable turn of foot and I think she is a good horse for the Place Accumulator.”

He said of his seven-year-old Silvano gelding Martial Eagle, “He is up against the three best horses in the country, Variety Club, Jackson and Pomodoro, but with a 106 merit rating where else do you go? I can’t believe the bookmakers have made him 80-1 as he has a chance of making the first four. If he finishes in the first five it will be mission accomplished.”

He needed his first run of the season in a Pinnacle race over 1 400m and finished just 2,4 lengths at level weights behind Variety Club. Then he was caught four wide in the Green Point Stakes.

The horse who sat behind him four wide, Bravura, finished tailed off last and yet he managed to finish sixth, just six lengths behind Variety Club.

“He proved the strength of that run when giving weight to Thunder Dance in the Jet Master Stakes and finishing a close second. Who knows, Govender may have a Group 1 double on Saturday. After all, Man has been to the moon!”

Govender made Variety Club the one to beat over the mile.

He said, “His gate speed means he is always up there, but I think he would win even easier if coming from off them. I remember him passing them as if they were standing still when coming from behind in a Juvenile race.”

Today’s treble

Govender was bullish about the chances of Finnigan, The Morrigan and Gold Academy on today’s card at Kenilworth and said all three were “very, very well and ready to win.”
