And along comes a new Porsche Boxster Spyder
PORSCHE has put its Boxster through a purification process and unveiled a faster, more driver-focussed and lightweight version of the roadster.
Unveiled at this week’s New York Auto Show, the new Boxster Spyder is actually the second iteration of the distinctive droptop - the first launched in 2012 in previous generation guise.
This one, however, ups the performance ante with a 3.8litre flat six pushing 276kW, making this the most powerful Boxster model yet. Porsche says 0-100km/h will take 4.5 seconds, and top speed is 290km/h.
Intended to mimic the design of fabric-roofed Porsches from the ‘60s, the Spyder’s top features two elongated rear fins. When folded away the soft roof is stored underneath a streamlined one-piece engine/tonneau cover. As in historic models, the roof ’s mechanism is operated manually with no heavy electric motors to offer open-and-close assistance. The Spyder’s diet plan also means air conditioning and audio systems have been left out.
Just like the recently introduced and track-inspired Cayman GT4 with which this model shares its front and rear bumper designs, the Boxster Spyder will also only come with a six-speed manual gearbox.
Other special features include a firmer suspension lowered by 20mm, 911 Carrera brakes, a smaller steering wheel, lightweight bucket seats, and Spyder badges on the soft top’s sides.
The Boxster Spyder will land in South Africa this August with a price tag of R1 010 000.
