Tributes pour in after bungee tragedy

- Lisa Isaacs

TRIBUTES have poured in from around the world for a former Cape Town student who was killed in a tragic bungee jump accident in Spain.

Kleyo de Abreu, 23, was killed instantly after she had jumped off a bridge and struck the side wall of a smaller, lower bridge below, UK newspaper the Daily Mail reported.

Tuesday’s incident happened near the mountain village of Lanjaron in Spain.

An investigation has been launched into the tragedy.

De Abreu, a British national, was a former 3D design student at CPUT. She was originally from London and had recently returned from living in Cape Town to follow her passion and study fashion.

Her father Bernard Atwell said relatives were in shock at her death.

“Every father will say this, but she was very special. She was a very beautiful young woman who had all her life ahead of her.

“She was 23 years old, but to me she will always be my little baby.”

Atwell said his daughter had been visiting her aunt and cousins in southern Spain after she had been travelling in Morocco.

“My daughter is gone and nothing is going to bring her back, but I have spoken to the family and we are all on the same page – we don’t want something like this to happen again.”

Yesterday, devastated family and friends, and those who had heard of the incident from as far as Puerto Rico, Ireland, India and the US, posted on a tribute Facebook page dedicated to De Abreu.

“Too young to be taken from this Earth. It’s always a shock when this happens to anyone. I’m close in age, so we have to cherish every moment. Rest in Peace,” said Bianca Jo.

Theresa Duncan-de Vos said: “Rest in peace. May the angels carry you swiftly home.”

Roger Coomarewe posted: “God bless you Kleyo. I did not know you personally but read about the tragic accident. My prayers and thoughts are with you and your family at this difficult time.

“For her parents, my deepest condolences and try to find peace knowing that she would be in heaven watching down on you now.”
