City add a giant of a defender to squad

- Rodney Reiners

CAPE TOWN CITY are eagerly counting down the days to the club’s debut fixture in the PSL.

After the formation of the new Cape top-flight team, the newly-assembled squad can’t wait to lace up and hit the field.

City open their first-ever campaign with a home match against Polokwane City at the Cape Town Stadium next Tuesday (kickoff 7.30pm) – and, with the hype and buzz around the club, they are expecting a bumper crowd at the former World Cup venue in Green Point.

Tickets are already on sale, with General Stand Tickets (R40) and Grandstand Tickets (R65). There is also a Golden Circle Section at R150. Only 500 of these tickets are available, and City owner John Comitis promises that this area will have “entertainment, music, VIPs and a general atmosphere of fun”.

“I also want to urge the corporates to get behind the team,” added Comitis.

“And, not just behind the team, but also behind supporting the stadium. There are a business suites available and I’m pretty sure that, within those companies, there are an abundance of football supporters who want to get get behind City’s vision.”

As the countdown to the start of the PSL season continues, City yesterday added two more new names to their squad – Ghanaian central defender Joseph Adjei and goalkeeper Gershin Kock.

The duo join the host of other signings City have made over the last few weeks.

Adjei is highly rated and has already represented his country at youth level.

“He’s 21, he’s six-foot-six, and he looks the part,” said Comitis of Adjei. “He’s definitely a player we can work on for the future…”

Capetonian Kock has previously played for Steenberg United and Glendene – and has been earmarked to back up the club’s two other keepers, Shu-Aib Walters and Samora Motloung.

City coach Eric Tinkler and his team have been hard at work in preparation for next week’s opening game. They know the importance of getting off to a good start. The Cape’s fickle football followers love winners – and, if City are to make an immediate impact and steal their way into the hearts of Capetonians, then nothing less than a win over Polokwane will suffice.

While the squad has been put together hastily, and at the moment they are just a disparate bunch, the 14 players retained from Mpumalanga Black Aces are sure to provide the necessary stability.

Throw into the mix the goal-poaching talent Majoro, the defensive prowess of Johannes and Gumede and the European craft of Putsche, and City could just have the right stuff for next Tuesday.
