Liberty and liquor

-

I BELIEVE the closing times of liquor stores are rather unfair to the citizens of the City of Cape Town.

Most people only finish work at around 5pm or 6pm – sometimes later – and most would like to enjoy an alcoholic beverage to ease and relax after a hard day’s work. But, by the time they get to the liquor store, it is closed, leaving the hard worker tense.

I believe that this is also the main reason why there are many car accidents on the road; because of (people) rushing to the liquor store before it closes.

Also, by closing liquor stores at 6pm, the city will lose a lot of money: money they can use to improve the city and so forth; taxes earned from the sale of liquor could be used for housing and education, and feeding the homeless of the city, among other things.

The taxes made from the sale of the liquor could be used for road improvements and much more. The City of Cape Town is so far the only city in South Africa, as far as I know, with the earliest closing times of liquor stores, as many remain open till around 8pm or 9pm – sometimes even later.

I would suggest that the liquor store closing times be extended to around 8pm or 9pm and, if people are working later than that, they can go to shebeens in their area, which the city can also earn taxes from, making the city even greater.

Let’s extend the liquor store closing times for the liberty of each and every Capetonian! Lee Hoyle Cape Town
