Bosch Projects achieves two commendations at CESA Aon Engineering Excellence Awards
AT the recent CESA Aon Engineering Excellence Awards 2016, Bosch Projects received a commendation for the Nakambala Product Alignment and Refinery Project undertaken for its client Illovo Sugar Ltd / Zambia Sugar.
This project includes the construction of a modern, highspecification refinery to more than double the current annual refined sugar production capacity to 100 000 tons, and increase the annual sugar production capacity from 420 000 tons to 450 000 tons through a range of smaller factory improvements.
Bosch Projects was the EPCM (engineering, procurement and construction management) consultant for the project. Its equipment division also designed and supplied various items of process equipment to the project, including a 50 metre-high refined sugar conditioning silo. As part of this project, Bosch Projects utilised in house 3D state-of-the art scanning facilities, which saved significant engineering time and associated costs to give an accurate 3D plant model of the existing plant.
Young engineer Bosch Projects’ Louis de Waal received a commendation as Young Engineer of the Year at the awards.
He joined Bosch Projects in 2013, and has become an integral part of the team, specifically in evolving and putting together both the Gauteng offices as well as the Biogas Projects Division.
Due to his experience and expertise, De Waal was appointed as the senior electrical engineer for the first-ever all agricultural biomass-to-me-thane-to-energy-generation plant project in South Africa and Africa. He was responsible for the complete electrical design of the Bio2Watt Biogas Plant in Bronkhorstspruit, Gauteng – involving the design, construction, commission and handover of the complete biomass-to-energy plant. This included the Eskom connection, a self-built overhead line and switchyard, which served as the embedded generation point of connection for the electrical reticulation.
The project covered uncharted territory in terms of the National Grid Code, the Embedded Generation Code and all other relevant Eskom standards.
Not only did he win the 2015 Bosch Young Professional of the Year Award, he was also honoured by being asked to present at the international Power & Electricity World Africa Expo 2016 on the topic “A Real World Application of Combined Heat and Power Plants”.
