IMF pushes for external audit

-

MOZAMBIQUE’S government should take measures to restore confidence with international partners by accepting an external forensic audit, the outgoing International Monetary Fund (IMF) representative, Alex Segura, said this week. A group of 14 donors have demanded an investigation by international auditors on how loans to three state-owned firms have been used before resumption of aid. The group suspended support after the country revealed that it had more than $1.4 billion (R20.1bn) in undisclosed debt. While Mozambique’s attorneygeneral was investigating the hidden debt, the government could do more to restore relations with its lenders, Segura said. President Filipe Nyusi said his government would be open to an external examination should an ongoing local probe fail to yield results. – Bloomberg KENYA
