INDEPENDENT Media has partnered with a Russian media house to host a global photojournalism exhibit in honour of deceased photojournalist Andrei Stenin.

As part of its commitment to Brics and global development, Independent Media has established media partnerships with fellow member states of Brazil, Russia, India and China.

One such partnership is with leading Russian media house Rossiya Segodnya (Russia Today), which expressed an interest in bringing the winning entries of an exhibition honouring Stenin, who tragically lost his life while covering the war in Ukraine in 2014.

The exhibition is being held at the Eclectica Gallery until Friday, and at Mullers Gallery from October 31.

It will then be taken to Paris, Beijing, Berlin, Cairo and other cities around the globe.

Independent Media Executive Chairman Dr Iqbal Survé said: “Independent Media is delighted to be the leading South African media partner for this exhibition of the winning entries. It is an opportunity to not only honour Andrei Stenin and photojournalists around the world, but to acknowledge photojournalism as an art and craft in documenting the human story.”

Consul General of Russia Roman E Ambarov said: “We hope that the current photo exhibition will generate more interest in such Russian initiatives as the Andrei Stenin International Photo Contest among South Africans and contribute to the bilateral cultural relations between Russia and South Africa.”

Gallery owner Shamiela Tyer said it was an opportunity to assist in rejuvenating interest in photojournalism and photography as a whole.
