Sotshonond­a’s United Nations of Africa returns to the yard

BONGANI Sotshonond­a, an internatio­nal-acclaimed chromatic marimba, percussion­ist and composer returns to Kwa Sec NY138 no.52 in Gugulethu this Sunday to perform with his band, dubbed the United Nations of Africa, from 3pm.

This time around he features a special guest, percussion­ist Jongi Monatsi, his long-time friend with whom he started the Phambili Marimba Ensemble.

United Nations of Africa comprising of pianist Nelson Malela, drummer Nikolas Dlakavu, Jackson Kiria Kuti on saxophone and bassist Ricky Kleinsmith has been featured twice at the Cape Town Internatio­nal Jazz Festival, in 2013 and 2014.

Their repertoire is African jazz with a mixture of world music.

For the past 20 years Bongani has wowed audiences in the country and internatio­nally.

His work includes collaborat­ions with world renowned vibraphoni­sts like Stephon Harris (New York), Pascal Schumacher (Belgium), Magda de Vries (a classical marimba player, who now lectures in Japan) and the UCT Big band headed by professor Mike Campbell.

Some of the musicians he played with includes the Brubeck Brothers, Morris Goldberg, Willie Van Zyl Haubrich, Shannon Mowday and many more.

He also co-produced and directed the opening ceremony of the world Associatio­n of engineers at the CTICC in October 2005.

He has performed at the Cape Town Internatio­nal Jazz Festival with his 13 piece ensemble. - Staff writer
