Jail killers for life

- Philip Bam Spokesperson for the Grassy Park Community Police Forum

THE Grassy Park CPF is saddened by the tendency to shoot, maim and kill police officials. These shootings are criminal in the extreme and, to our minds, an attack on the state.

We reject any justification or rationale such as raising issues about police safety and self-protection rules.

Nobody has the right to violently attack our policemen and women.

They are servants of the state and must be allowed to do their duty without fear or favour. Killing them just to steal their firearms so that further crimes can be committed is an act of wanton criminality which we reject and condemn with all the disgust we can muster.

South Africa is buckling under a crime wave fuelled by disrespect for the law and law enforcers. Our communities must stand up and condemn this sense of lawlessness with all the legal nonviolent means at its disposal.

The public at large should report the whereabouts of these criminals. Together we can make the difference. If clever lawyers get them off, the community through its structures must institute civil prosecution.

This state of affairs just cannot be allowed to continue. We also want to urge our law enforcers and especially the SAPS to be clear on their mandate to protect our society and not to give these miscreants who terrorise our communities any leeway. Be firm.

We extend our condolences to the loved ones of those who paid the ultimate price for serving our community and commiserate with those injured. Every attack on a police official, whether SAPS or Metro, is a wake-up call to all the citizens of this country, especially the legislators who must ensure that our laws don’t have loopholes that can be exploited by these criminal killers.

We also want to encourage neighbourhood watches to continue to be vigilant and support the crimefighting in our neighbourhoods.

It’s our considered opinion that anybody who takes a shot at a police official, whether fatal or not, should receive a sanction of life imprisonment.

Take them and their ilk out of our communities. They have no place among decent law-abiding citizens.
