Oakes highlights unsung leaders
I THANK Dougie Oakes for his insightful and interesting articles under “350 Years Castle of Good Hope, Freedom from Oppression”.
The last two articles were about the leadership of King Sekhukhune of the Bapedi kingdom, and chief Langalibalele, leader of the Hlubi people, respectively.
Many years ago, before the time of the internet and Google, I was a teacher of history at high school. I often brought additional reading material to the classroom to offset the one-sided syllabus.
I would have loved to share the Oakes articles with my pupils.
All the articles by Oakes provide information about persons and leaders of this country who were, during the period I taught history, scarcely mentioned, if at all, and then usually in a negative light.
