Terracotta Army exhibition

-

THE Terracotta Army and The First Emperor of China is an exhibition that explores 209 BC China, and is on display in the city.

It has been described as the most complete exhibition on the Terracotta Army, the necropolis and life of the First Emperor. They have all been reproduced by Chinese craftsmen from the excavation region, with a particular consideration for detail to maintain the same beauty and originality of the original works.

The exhibition consists of more than 180 statues and 100 artefacts on display, depicting the armies of Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor of China.

It is a form of funerary art buried with the emperor in 210 to 209 BCE, whose purpose was to protect the emperor in his afterlife. The figures, dating from about the late third century BC, were discovered in 1974 by local farmers in Lintong District, Xi’an, in the Shaanxi province.

Estimates from 2007 were

that the three pits where the artefacts were contained held more than 8 000 Terracotta Army soldiers, 130 chariots with 520 horses, and 150 cavalry horses, the majority of which remained buried in the pits near Qin Shi Huang’s mausoleum.

Other terracotta non-military figures were found in other pits, including officials, acrobats, strongmen and musicians.

The exhibition is on at the Jubilee Exhibition Hall, The Watershed, at the V&A Waterfront, and runs daily until February 12 from 9am to 6pm. – Staff Writer
