Swift 1.2 gets a raunchy RS style pack

- DENIS DROPPA

A CAR with an RS badge is usually cause for excitement among high-performance enthusiasts, but Suzuki South Africa has decided to use the moniker on a new model that has the wolf ’s clothing without the bite.

The Swift 1.2 RS is a limited-edition Suzuki hatchback dressed in a racy visual package comprising sportier front and rear spoilers and side skirts to visually “lower” the vehicle. Custom dark machined rims on Goodyear Dura tyres and a tailgate spoiler further add to the athletic look, as do dark blue sporty decals and RS lettering, and painted side mirror covers. All RS models are available only in Arctic white pearl metallic.

Inside, the 1.2 RS acquires custom seat covers.

But beneath the extravagant plumage is a stock-standard Swift 1.2 GL, moved along by the same little 1 200cc 16-valve engine with humble outputs of 63kW and 113Nm.

The GL spec comes with creature comforts such as electric windows, a radio/CD player with Bluetooth connectivity, air conditioning and a multifunction steering wheel.

Two air bags and ABS brakes make up the safety kit.

“When we conceptualised the 1.2 RS, we set the target of creating an exciting and visually appealing Special Edition for under R200 000. With a price tag of only R184 800 and a rapidly growing waiting list, we have surely hit our target,” says André Venter, divisional manager for sales and marketing at Suzuki Auto South Africa.

The price includes a 3-year/100 000km warranty and 2-year/30 000 km service plan.
